Swale Borough Council has contributed £20,000 to foodbanks in Swale to help support the people most in need this winter.
Swale Borough Council’s foodbank grant programme awarded £26,000 to Swale Foodbank, Family Foodbank and Citizen’s Advice Swale earlier this year to support families hit the hardest by the pandemic, but more is desperately needed.
The money will be split between Family Foodbank in Sheerness and Swale Foodbank in Sittingbourne to meet the increased demand for food packages from families in need.
Cllr Julian Saunders, deputy cabinet member for community at the council, said:
“Now more than ever it is crucial that we do what we can to support the local organisations that provide help for the most vulnerable people in the borough.
“This £20,000 will help local foodbanks continue to provide their essential services through the winter.
“Family Foodbank is operating at six locations across Swale and delivering 7,200 meals to local people every month.
“Swale Foodbank are running low on food and need additional money to help support the people who rely on their services.
“We allocated £26,000 earlier this year to support foodbanks and community groups who were working hard to support local people through the pandemic, and now with winter here, people need help and support more than ever.
“We urge anybody in a position to help support their local foodbank with money or food donations to contact the foodbanks to see which items they need the most.
“This has been a difficult year for everybody, and we must continue to band together as a community and support those who have found themselves in a vulnerable position this winter.”
