So, was the first specialist market favour of the month?

The Council keen to follow up on the success of the generally well received artisan markets which run every second Saturday of the month are promoting a new range of specialist and themed markets which kicked off yesterday with a Sittingbourne Food Festival.

Beth's Mogador - Hungarian & Austrian Cuisine

I had some reservations about these specialist markets, the timing of which has created some obstacles which have yet to be overcome and I am uncertain as to whether Sittingbourne is ready for some of these themed markets, but time will tell.

Therefore, with some trepidation we made our way to the town centre, hoping for the best. After all existing food festivals in and around town have a decent enough track record.

On arrival, we saw the usual array of blue canopies lining both sides of the top half of the high street and as we progress further is was clear that our reservations were, in this instance, unfounded.

John's Kicthen

With the exception of only two stalls, every other was selling food and drink and indeed compared to other food festivals we have attended in our time this was a decent showing and in fact very good for the first of its kind.

We really enjoyed our Broccoli, Stilton and Walnut Pasty's from Eve’s Vegetarian Pantry, our cakes from 5 Steps Coffee & Deli and John's Kitchen. Honestly we could have spent a fortune here with so much to choose from. We really were spoilt for choice.

Cllr Mike Cosgrove, cabinet member for regeneration at the council, said:
"Traders and shoppers have really supported the Saturday artisan market, and the feedback we’ve had from them shows a real appetite for more.

"By introducing the new themed markets, we can build on the success we’ve had so far, and offer residents and visitors a new shopping experience in the heart of the town centre."

Cafe con amore

The new markets will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month from August to December, and run from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm at the top of the High Street.

Future themed markets include:

23rd September - Simply Vintage Market
28th October – Babygrows Market
25th November - Shop Local Market
23rd December - Christmas Market
