Swale Borough Council has ordered an increased number of sacks of salt this year to keep resident’s pathways free of ice and snow during the cold season.

Timed to coincide with drops in temperatures around this time of year, the council will be repeating its previously successful initiative, handing out the free sacks across the borough.

The giveaway will take place on Small Business Saturday, 2 December, in Faversham, Sheerness and Sittingbourne, when residents can pick up the free bags from designated town centre car parks.

Councillor David Simmons, cabinet member for the environment and rural affairs at the council, said:

“Keeping paths free of ice and snow not only helps to make sure that residents are safer, particularly earlier on during the mornings and later on in the evenings when icy patches can be a slip hazard – it also makes things like putting out the bins much easier at times when it can be cold and dark.

“The scheme was extremely popular last year and is back because of popular demand from borough residents – in fact, this year we have had to order more than we did last year.

We’ll be giving them away in three town centre car parks, so hopefully, as many people as possible can benefit from this offer.”

The sacks will be available to collect from 10 am – 2 pm at the Forum Car Park, Sittingbourne

Supplies are limited to one sack per person and are available on a first come, first served basis.
