Parks and green spaces across the country have raised their Green Flag Award with pride in a year when millions of people have seen the value of having great quality green spaces on their doorstep.

Among them is Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park which is raising a Green Flag Award for the fifteenth year in a row.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park is one of more than 2,000 sites across the country to collect the award for 2020.

Cllr Eddie Thomas, deputy cabinet member for the environment at the council, said:

“We’re delighted to celebrate our green flag at Oare Gunpowder Works for the fifteenth year in a row.

“We work really hard to create safe and inviting environments at all of our green spaces and parks and this green flag is a sign we’re on the right track.

“Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park offered local residents a place to relax and exercise this year while we dealt with the effects of covid and lockdown together.

“And of course, we couldn’t have done any of this without the dedication and hard work of our volunteers and steering group who quickly adapted to the difficulties we were faced with this year.

“Swale offers an exciting and diverse array of green spaces, and we are taking the time the deserve to bring them to life for visitors, so we look forward to more green flags in the future.”

Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said:

“This year, more than ever, our parks and green spaces have been a lifeline and we know that millions of people have used them to relax, meet friends, exercise or simply escape for a short time.

“It is testament to the incredible dedication and hard work of parks staff and volunteers that, despite the challenges that went along with record numbers of visitors, Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park achieved the highest international standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
