Councils across Kent and Medway have released draft business cases setting out options for the most significant reorganisation of local government in the area in 50 years. Developed with KPMG, the proposals explore several ways new unitary councils could be formed.

Each council will now consider the models, which range from creating a single authority to forming three, four, or five new ones. Swale councillors are due to meet on 19 November to agree which option they will support.

Cllr Tim Gibson, Leader of Swale Borough Council, said:
"After a lot of work and discussions, we’re getting a better picture of what the potential changes could mean for local people.
"The full council will meet on 19 November to discuss the options and decide which we think will provide the best outcomes for local people.
“We will then, along with all the other councils, submit our preferences to the Government by 28 November."

The publication of the proposals follows a public engagement exercise, which highlighted that residents want any new system to prioritise high-quality services, value for money, and effective problem-solving.

The Government will review the submitted business cases and is expected to begin a full public consultation early next year. A final decision on the future structure of Kent’s councils is anticipated next summer.
