Milton Creek Country Park and Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park have been awarded Green Flags.

Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park has been awarded a green flag every for the past 16 years, but this is the first time that Milton Creek Country Park has received the coveted Green Flag and been recognised as one of the best parks in the country.

In a record-breaking year when 2,208 UK parks have been recognised, Milton Creek Country Park and Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park are now raising their prestigious green flags.

The green flag award is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, awarded by Keep Britain Tidy, and are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that make the green space a great space that everyone can enjoy.

Julian Saunders, chair of the environment committee at the council, said:

“We’re delighted that Milton Creek Country Park in Sittingbourne and Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park in Faversham have both been awarded green flag awards this year.

“We work hard to create parks and green spaces that meet the standard of excellence expected of green flag parks.

“Swale boasts a wide variety of coast, countryside and green spaces, and we’re always looking for ways to improve local amenities for residents and visitors.”

Tim Valentine, vice chair of the environment committee at the council, said:

“We’ve been awarded the green flag award every year at Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park for 16 years, and that is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who work through rain or shine to create an award winning environment for people to enjoy.

“This is the very first time we’ve been awarded the green flag award for Milton Creek Country Park.

“Last year, our frisbee golf event was awarded a Love Parks award, and we have a free visitor car park being built which is on schedule to open by the end of the year.

“I encourage everybody to get out and enjoy our green spaces this summer.”

Paul Todd, accreditation manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said:

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making Milton Creek Country Park and Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park worthy of Green Flag Awards.

“They are vital green spaces for the community in Swale and this award is testament to all the hard work of staff and volunteers, who do so much to ensure that it maintains the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
