Phoenix Explorers have risen from the ashes to create a remarkable opportunity for young people to develop Skills for Life.
During covid, the group lost a lot of Scouts and Explorers. As the district was restarting after lockdowns, passionate Youth Leads visited groups and district events to meet future Explorers and young people who wanted to return to Scouting but could not find a way.
The team wanted to shape the unit to meet the specific demands of the young people. Hence Phoenix Explorers was created, as a new unit closer to the young people of Sittingbourne. Group Leader Tom “would encourage anyone who is thinking about opening a new unit to take the leap of faith it is worth it.”
Meeting on Wednesday evenings, Phoenix Explorers (girls & boys aged 14-17) take on the over 200 activities that Scouts have to offer. One Explorer explains how “Scouting has really helped me grow in confidence. I feel I can talk to the leaders and the activities we do are great.” In recent months, Phoenix
Explorers have taken part in hikes, climbing, archery, pioneering, survival skills & camping.
With Scouts, young people not only get the opportunity to try a variety of challenges; but they also get the experience that helps them to develop Skills for Life. In a recent poll 94% of Scouts said they had developed useful skills. Phoenix Explorers have focused on developing skills in many areas including teamwork, communication, leadership & confidence to name a few.
Group Leader Tom has been a part of Scouts since he was 6 recently returning as a Leader, he describes how “Phoenix gave me the opportunity to set up something new which is a huge passion of mine, but also being able to support Young People to develop skills and continue their scouting journeys.”
Over the Summer months, they will be taking part in more camps, water activities, caving, night hiking, fire building & backwoods cooking.
