St Michaels Road to stay open to traffic

There was some confusion regarding the proposed traffic flows around the train station, following last Thursday's announcement on the plans for the regeneration of Sittingbourne Town Centre.
Director of Regeneration, Pete Raine informed us that St Michaels Road will not be closed as originally envisaged in the town centre redevelopment proposals put forward by Tesco’s and will remain open to traffic.
However he was not able to expand on the proposed traffic flow around the train station, other than to say that the Spirit of Sittingbourne consortium has gone to considerable lengths to engage with Kent Highways on this matter and that the full details will be brought forward as part of the planning application which is not expected until the end of the year.
On the question of buses Mr Raine explained that "the intention is certainly to have a bus interchange in front of the station so we have a genuinely multi-modal hub, and I understand that discussions are proceeding with KCC and the bus operators to try to achieve this."
Finally on the subject of the proposed performance space currently dubbed ‘The Venue’ there will definitely be a public consultation. Mr Raine indicated that he is very keen to engage with local groups and organisations regarding this and there will be plenty of opportunity to do so.
